Modern Dance
The class is based on Humphrey-Limón Technique, which emphasizes the natural rhythm of fall and recovery and the use of breath and weight. The principles of the Technique are discovered through upper body movements, swings of arms and legs, drops and suspensions, energy and resistance, which provide dancers with an organic approach to movement. The focus lies on different movement dynamics, on rhythm, musicality and use of space, in keeping with the great expansivity of Limón’s work.
The natural rhythm of breath and the use of weight encourage less muscular tension. By focusing their attention on the dynamic, dancers are released in their movement, allowing themselves to be human in their dance. Human anatomy is highly respected in the work. Dancers don’t fight with their bodies trying to reach some form of perfection, but work on basic principles of movement and dynamic in their own bodies. Movements, forms and shapes from Limón’s repertory are included as part of the class as an inspiration for students.
