Lecture 1 I Gabriele Wittmann
Teaching dance analysis and writing to students of dance and choreography requires specific approaches: Dancers are artists. In order to motivate and pick up this target group, I decided to mix methods of analysis with the play of poetry, the solo of criticism with the ensemble work of collective creativity. Rather than using a set system of analysis, we create the road each time anew, following the parameters and style of the art work perceived.
We invent training methods for massaging words or reading unisono, following the choreography and/or the rehearsal process that leads to it. Different epistemes call for correspondances: Body Systems trained in Body Mind Centering lead to a different language and dramaturgy than a classical training or a contemporary training based on the US-postmoderns. We can blow up, re-compose, touch similar meanings. I will share experiences (and poems) from ten years of writing workshops for critics and dancers, writers and choreographers. On the permanent road of augmenting and refining perception.
