Workshop IV

Partnering Through Dance History / Dynamic Relationships of Support with Nora Kimball-Mentzos and Prof. Marc Spradling

These workshops aim to inform of and experiment with the many possibilities of partnership in a lab situation. The workshops will consist of daily lectures/discussions with material provided on printed handouts. Not all material discussed will be found in the texts. In addition, there will be some DVD viewing for class participation activities and discussion.

Concept 1:

Addressing One Form through Many Perspectives

Goals: With the understanding of the Arabesque, the student will have a chance to discover and rediscover the coordination needed to support the body through the different types of dance forms and eras.

Concept 2:

Learning a Specific Choreography

Jiri Kylian – Pas de quatre from the Symphony of Psalms

William Forsythe – Pas de deux from The Vile Parody of Address

Goals: This workshop introduces the student to technical partnering through choreographic excerpts of work by Jiri Kylian and William Forsythe.

At the end of the sessions, the student will hopefully have more knowledge of the background of partnering in various dance periods, as well as a solid understanding of the elements which two of the most world renown choreographers use in their choreographic work.

Room: Dance Studio 1 or 2
