Workshop III

Embodied Research: The Trace is not the End with Nancy Stark Smith and Norah Zuniga Shaw

Nancy and Norah will lead a workshop exploring embodied research and the integration of analytical and creative/experiential processes. We will approach the work with a few overarching questions. How does our dance experience create knowledge, and conversely, how are our ideas experienced? How can we approach concepts from an embodied rigor, put language to experience, and create “traces” that communicate? And in the context of the larger discussion of cultural heritage in dance, what happens to the traces we create and how do these traces (written text, scores, audio, video, images) remain an active element of the ongoing creative process?

In this workshop, we will move, observe, write, draw, talk, and move some more. Our process will cycle from question to embodiment to trace and back to embodiment. A range of interdisciplinary creative methods and movement practices, including some contact improvisation, will be used. We will work together to discover how a fuller range of ideas and questions contained within dance can be moved, traced, transmitted, communicated, and used to catalyze new creative activity.
