Oral History with Prof. Dr. Jeff Friedman and Olga de Soto
These workshops will focus on how oral history functions as a mode of documenting, preserving and making our dance heritage accessible. We will teach interview skills, with a focus on embodied knowledge and how that knowledge is communicated. Some of the topics that we will cover include eliciting embodied experiences, including, but not limited to dancing; the embodied production of voice; and the use of embodied composition in developing speech and narrative.
We will practice these skills with each other during the workshop. Since both Olga and Jeff are committed to recycling documentation back into performance, these interviews will then become the foundation for developing movement phrases and exploratory choreographic projects. Demonstrations of Jeff and Olga’s work in these areas of theory and practice are included.
