Limón and Folkwang
The first contacts between José Limón Company and Folkwang took place in last centuries' 50s. At that time german-american summer classes have been arranged at Folkwang school and guest teachers from overseas have been invited. Kurt Jooss, who was leading the dance department at that time, established the Limón-Technique as part of the education. And still today, the almost 60 year long lasting relationship between Essen-Werden and New York is cultivated continuously: Kurt Jooss, Susanne Linke, Jean Cébron rehearsed pieces from the Folkwang-Repertoire in New York; Works of the Limón-Repertoire have become part of Folkwang-Dance Nights. Further there has been a lively exchange between teachers: Betty Jones, Roxane D´Orléans Juste, Libby Nye and Alice Condodina have been teaching at Folkwang. Jean Cébron and Lutz Förster have been guest teachers at Limón-Institute. Many Folkwang-Dancers, such as Lucas Hoving, Pina Bausch, Carlos Orta, Lutz Förster and last but not least Daniel Fetecua Soto have been or are dancing with Limón Company.
The topic of 3rd Dance Education Biennale 2012 Frankfurt am Main CULTURAL HERITAGE in DANCE follows up the existing tradition between Folkwang and Limón. And 2012 is also a double-jubilee year: It's Folkwang's 85th year of existence and Limón Dance Company's 65th Birthday. Both institutions are connected in having as well a human claim as an affinity to dance movement. The organic courses of movement are based on the mentality of humanity. This mentality helps the students to find clearness in today's variety of possibilities and techniques. In the frame of the preparation Workshops and Trainings for 3rd Dance Education Biennale 2012 with Alice Condodina and Giorgia Madamma the students have learned to fill the Limón-Choreographies with powerful life and to understand it as a guidance to creativity. The endless possibilities of the Limón-Repertoire offer the openness to develop itself further with every new generation and they give the students the artistic potential to express themselves and grow to individual artists.
The project has been accompanied documentary by Philipp Ludwig Stangl and has been implemented filmic by the students for the Presentation in Frankfurt.
