Workshop I

Out-score/In-score with Liz Waterhouse and Jeanine Durning

This workshop will involve Motion Bank team members Jeanine Durning and Elizabeth Waterhouse in a collective questioning of how choreographies out-score themselves from the choreographer/author/writer and in-score themselves by the performer/interpreter/reader. Derived from their experiences working with Deborah Hay and William Forsythe respectively, this co-taught workshop will engage with how scored proposals (as scripts and prompts) couple with choreographic direction (spoken, read, real-time and/or remembered) to generate performance.

The workshop will be taught in the format of a series by examining these two choreographic and performative approaches in alteration. The works to be considered are both premiers from 2011: Deborah Hay’s “As Holy Sites Go” based upon the score “No Time to Fly” and William Forsythe’s “Sider.” Both pieces challenge the performers to entrain specific modes of perception, reflection, and attention. They also present alternative routes to escape normative or habitual actions. Students will have time to draw connections between these modes of working, to deepen their sense of the range and possibilities of choreographic and performative craft.
