Stephan Brinkmann received his education at Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen with Malou Airaudo, Jean Cébron, Lutz Förster and Hans Züllig. He studied Media Sciences, Sociology and German Language at the University Cologne and completed a post-graduate course in Dance Pedagogy at Folkwang Universität der Künste.

Stephan Brinkmann was Dancer and Chorographer for two years at Folkwang Dancestudio before he became a permanent member of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch in 1995. His choreographies have been awarded several times in the frame of the competition for Young Choreographers in Hannover an he received the Folkwang price.

Currently he is Lecturer for Contemporary Dance at Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen, Ruhruniversität Bochum and Alanus Hochschule für Kunst und Gesellschaft in Bonn.
